    David E. Tanner, D.O.

Osteopathic Physiatry Physician — Pioneer of Clinical Advances in Modern Migraine Treatment

Dr. Tanner has been a migraine physician in the Boulder area since 1999. He completed medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned a residency and board certification in Neuromuscular Skeletal/Ary medicine.

During his residency, he was trained in medical acupuncture through UCLA and in Craig PENS (percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) — training that laid the foundation for his understanding of the central nervous system's role in producing sensory pathology that has since been identified in medical circles as migraine.

Dr. Tanner began his career as a staff physician at the Boulder Center for Osteopathic Medicine, where he developed his skills in integrating physiatry principles with his manual manipulation skills and evolving for ecological management for modern migraine concepts. As clinical evidence and his own experience pointed increasingly toward the CNS as the primary neuro sensory pathology generator, he pioneered a new paradigm for the treatment of a constellation of symptoms that include head and neck, pain, nausea, brain fog, fatigue and a multitude of other symptoms that was ultimately characterized as atypical, chronic migraine, as well as atypical migranous presentations.

In the early 2000s through the present, Dr. Tanner has seen thousands of atypical, chronic migraineurs that could not get successfully treated. These experiences deepened his empathy for patients and coincided with a pivotal moment in migraine science: the field was evolving toward addressing the central nervous system as the primary target of migraine therapy.

During his physiatry and general medical training, Dr. Tanner gained extensive experience accessing neurovascular bundles for a variety of medical interventions. As this became combined with the evolution of peripheral blockade and migraine sciences in the early 2000s, his ability to affect these systems multiplied exponentially. He began to see dramatic success in the treatment of migraine patients using these concepts that extended well into the tens of thousands. These peripheral interventions also included the use of chemodenervation (a.k.a. Botox), which combined to create a treatment set that is extremely powerful and improves the ability to help patients who would otherwise suffer.

This aligned perfectly with his existing expertise in manual, pharmacological, and injection therapies. In 2003, he founded the pain management clinic that became Creekside Physical Medicine. He has since become a regional pioneer in BOTOX® for migraine (since 2005) and continues to stay current through national and international conferences and ongoing study. His position within the migraine treatment world for greater than 20 years has enabled him to absorb the evolution of the science and create a clinic that combines neurophysiology concepts, manual medicine concepts, advances in peripheral nerve blockade principles, and the highest level of migraine therapeutic concepts. This evolution has enabled CPM to treat patients who otherwise would not be helped.
